Covering Georgia for the Los AngelesTimes
I covered the state of Georgia during the 2020 Senate runoff election for the Los Angeles Times. Working as a cinematographer and video journalist, I filmed organizers of color as they canvassed, rallied, and turned out voters across the state. I also framed up interviews, covered mutual aid efforts, and lensed faith-based communities.
COVID vaccines weren’t yet out, and production safety protocols were pretty restrictive. I ended up beaming in the story editor from Oakland, CA while working as a crew of one.
I did have a “plus one” on some days. My dad stepped in as a Production Assistant for the Black Voters Matter rally in Macon, GA. I caught some sleep and watched the treeline recede while he made the two-hour drive from Gwinnett to Bibb County. He again took the wheel while I filmed tracking shots of Atlanta’s skyline. That and many other moments didn’t survive the editing room. We had fun anyways.
This was a tough assignment, with lots to cover in a truncated amount of time. It was still very rad to film Georgia, including neighborhoods I’d grown up in, for a national audience. I counted this moment and its telling a victory.
